The Sport of Fencing

Fencing is the ultimate mind-body sport. The complex nature of fencing has led some to refer to it as "physical chess." It develops speed, agility, balance and intelligence -- its participants must make split-second decisions and take immediate actions.

Yet, it is a sport that can be enjoyed by a vast array of enthusiasts -- regardless of gender, age or even body type. Furthermore, both the full-bodied and physically disabled can participate!

Technique: Through fencing, athletes acquire the reflexes of a boxer, the legs of a high jumper and the concentration of a tournament chess player. And, because of the speed of its action, fencing is considered the fastest martial sport. Above all, it's fun!

Safety: Fencing is one of the safest sports. The fencing uniform is designed to permit ease of motion while thoroughly protecting the fencer from injury.

The modern sport of fencing has three different swords: foil, epee & sabre. Each has a slightly different history, target areas and rules.

Foil: The foil is the modern version of the dueling rapier. Touches are scored with the point of the blade and must land on the torso of the body.

Epee: The epee is the descendant of the dueling sword. Touches are scored with the point of the blade. The entire body is a valid target.

Sabre: The sabre is the modern version of the slashing cavalry sword. Touches can be scored with cutting motions as well as with the point of the blade. The target area is the entire body above the bend of the hips, as if one were astride a horse.
